Description

A cozy and simple dessert featuring tender apples with a buttery, crispy topping.

Ingredients

  • About 6 medium Apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • Granulated sugar (for the apples)
  • Brown sugar (for the topping)
  • All-purpose flour
  • Old fashioned oats (optional but recommended)
  • Cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter (cold or melted)
  • Optional: lemon juice, vanilla, nutmeg, chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly butter an 8 by 8 baking dish.
  2. Peel apples if desired, then slice them into thin chunks.
  3. Toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice, then spread in the baking dish.
  4. Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  5. Cut in cold butter until crumbly or stir until clumps form with melted butter.
  6. Spread topping over the apples, keeping it craggy.
  7. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  8. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use a mix of apple types for best results. Letting the crisp cool helps thicken the juices.
