Ingredients
- About 6 medium Apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
- Granulated sugar (for the apples)
- Brown sugar (for the topping)
- All-purpose flour
- Old fashioned oats (optional but recommended)
- Cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Butter (cold or melted)
- Optional: lemon juice, vanilla, nutmeg, chopped nuts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly butter an 8 by 8 baking dish.
- Peel apples if desired, then slice them into thin chunks.
- Toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice, then spread in the baking dish.
- Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
- Cut in cold butter until crumbly or stir until clumps form with melted butter.
- Spread topping over the apples, keeping it craggy.
- Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use a mix of apple types for best results. Letting the crisp cool helps thicken the juices.
