Ingredients
- 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or a mix)
- 2 cups milk
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: paprika for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and stir in flour to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in milk, stirring until the sauce thickens.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the onions, and half of the cheese.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese.
- Pour the sauce over the layered potatoes and season with salt, pepper, and paprika if desired.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
