Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  4. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  7. Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf to help it cook evenly.
  8. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with toppings like salted butter, sharp cheddar, honey, or jam. Store leftovers at room temperature wrapped in a towel or in a paper bag.
